Apparently this bunch of fellas are called THE ROOTS. Apparently they were formed in 1987. Apparently they are a hip-hop group. I have heard of them,, but know nothing more. Other than the fact that the album they have just produced with John Legend is probably one of the best of the last 25 years.
It's not actually been released over here yet. All we've had is 'Wake Up Everybody', with the brilliant Melanie Fiona and Common rapping on it too. But I've found a lot of the stuff on YouTube, and I watched their brilliant near-2-hour set from the American Express session last night, and I can safely say it is some of the greatest soul music I've ever heard.
The Roots are certainly a band I'll now be looking out for in the future - I don't care what it sounds like, as long as it's a lot like this. It's just stunning, stunning stuff.
If you have a spare hour or so over the next 24, watch the link I've posted in a little earlier up - the AMEX session. It's certainly worth it, even if you only like horns and trumpets. Yes, Damian, you too.
THE ROOTS, you are the Day Dedicatees for Saturday 25th September 2010.
